(The gorgeous ‘Ghost Mouth’ live by Girls)
It is the typical story of a boy whose family was part of the Children of God cult. The boy’s brother dies because the cult doesn’t believe in medical practices, then the boy’s dad splits. The cult moves the boy and his mother all around the world and even forces her into prostitution. The boy finally flees the cult and ends up apart of the Texas gutter-punk scene. The boy gets pulled out of the scene by a local millionaire and planted in the budding San Francisco music scene. There the boy meets a new musician friend and they play music together like their life depends on it, as Girls. Now Girls have released their debut album and they’re one of the hottest buzz bands of 2009.
Their debut album, also entitled, Album is a conglomeration of classic 60’s pop, retro songs, love, loss and the priceless observations of this very worldly young man.
‘Ghost Mouth’ has a waltz-like shuffle, very reminiscent of something Glasvegas would enjoy. Textures of lovely melodic guitar hang over lyrics like, “I’m on a ghost train in a ghost cloud and I don’t know how to get out and get up to heaven.”
‘Big Bad Mean Motherfucker’ sounds like The Dandy Warhols covering The Beach Boys with some extra psychedelic muscle supplied by Thirteenth Floor Elevators, a raucous and fun tromp of vintage rock with energetic pop melodies.
Cool like: Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, Beach Boys, MGMT, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Morrissey, The Black Kids, Glasvegas, The Dandy Warhols, Crocodiles, Thirteenth Floor Elevators
