(Screaming Lights play the wonderful ‘Volts’ live)
The comparisons with Interpol and The Smiths are mainly due to Treadell’s quivering croon. As far as the band are concerned, they go for it even harder than their peers.
‘Volts’ is the sick opener on Like Angels, a firm Post Punk rhythm, some tight angular guitar work and Treadell’s longing vocals, all riding a pulsating bass line.
Next, ’21st Century’ has really catchy dark vocals and some nice harmonies over an afrobeat groove. This will definitely be a lighter-in-the-air moment when they are playing stadiums.
‘Hello Tomorrow’, has some ultra-infectious guitar parts. The opening rhythm is simple and ends with a fabulous strung out chord, and when the other guitar lays down its riff the effect is spellbinding.
Later on, ‘Glow’ has a real Silversun Pickups feel to it, quick tapping drums with kick ass fuzzed guitar work. The song has nice even builds between each section and very strong rhythms. Sweet fuzzed out super bends see the song out in a cranked up fashion, bad ass!
A great debut from an up and coming Liverpool band.
Cool like: Editors, Interpol, Morrissey, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, The Killers, Magistrates, The Joy Formidable, The Maccabees, Silversun Pickups
