If you love My Bloody Valentine and you want something that pushes shoegaze towards the future, look no further than APTBS. They are one of the most exciting bands on the planet, live or on record. Exploding Head, their second fantastic album, contains some of the most mind-bending guitar noise to date.
Guitar god Oliver Ackerman, founder of Death by Audio guitar pedals, builds custom pedals for bands like My Bloody Valentine, U2, Nine Inch Nails. His technical genius pays off in spades as he creates a total-sonic annihilation of the senses, like no one else could.
The ultra-futuristic sound of “It Is Nothing” reminds me of a chase scene from the movie Blade Runner. Fantastic robot-like guitar bends pulsate around the pummeling rhythm section.
The second song, “In Your Heart”, is a noise masterpiece. The drums pound a quick beat. Then the sound of Thor’s hammer striking the Monolith chimes in to create something more than colossal. Epic is too shabby a word to describe the enormous sound this trio create. Track after track they build majestic sonic landscapes and then pulverize them with their wall of sound.
“Lost Feeling” comes complete with electronic flourishes and scuffling alien sounds, you get the idea.
Go see them live and buy this album.
Cool like: My Bloody Valentine, The Raveonettes, The Kills, Total-Sonic Annihilation, Coin Under Tongue, Grooms, Sisters
